When to visit Kaziranga National Park

When travellers ask us which month to plan a trip to Kaziranga, we never give a single month. The park shifts continuously from the day it reopens in late September/early October until it closes ahead of the heavy monsoon rains.  Every window brings a different character.

As the park re-opens, after the monsoon floods retreat back into the Brahmaputra and Dhansiri rivers, the tracks through the forests are fresh and bird life is active. The tall elephant grass remains deep green and standing high. Spotting animals through that dense cover requires patience - some mornings you might only see a rhino's back moving through the greenery - but the landscape is at its quietest, cleanest, greenest and most lush. There are fewer visitors in the early months of the season, offering a more exclusive and undisturbed experience. The jungle can always surprise you, offer exceptional sightings at any moment.

By December and January, winter mist settles over the wetlands and mornings turn cold enough to need a woollen jumper or a fleece jumper on early open-top jeep safaris. As the grass begins to dry and flatten under the sun, visibility improves across the floodplains. This is when the migratory birds arrive in large numbers—bar-headed geese, pelicans, and storks crowd the waterbodies. Rhinos, wild buffalo, and elephants spend long stretches grazing out in the open, making mid-winter the peak time for clear sightings.

February to April brings the spring season and a very different landscape. The forest department burns back sections of tall dry grass to encourage fresh growth, clearing vast stretches of view across the park. This coincides with the breeding season for several species, including swamp deer and rhinos. Animal movement increases significantly, and warmer afternoon temperatures draw wildlife out from the forest edge toward the remaining waterholes.

Every month holds its own reason to visit. The early season offers green cover and quiet trails, mid-winter brings vast birdlife and clear sightings, and late spring provides active wildlife across wide, open fields. We usually suggest choosing based on what you care about seeing most, rather than looking for a single perfect date on the calendar.
